Is it true that Max never smiled? He was known to smile often. Was Aline tall, skinny, and the same age as Tom? That she was plumb but beautiful and older than Tom is a storied part of their relationship. To watch him cavort with a taller editor and a taller mistress is ludicrous, and gives folks who don’t know Wolfe the expectation of a different person as they seek to know him better.

That Wolfe and his novels are gigantic is well-known even among many who never cracked one of his books.

The Witch doesn't do that, everything is justified and there aren't really any open questions come the end of the film.As a novelist, screenwriter, and member of the board of both the Thomas Wolfe Memorial and the Thomas Wolfe Society, here are my comments on the movie GENIUS. I feel like I've seen a lot of films that have weird things happen but never actually explain them or justify it in the film, intentionally leaving it vague because there isn't an answer that would make sense or satisfy all audiences. There is in fact a devil and he was influencing the family, he offers Thomasin to make a pact with him and she goes off to become one of his Witches. What we got instead was much better, it doesn't just end suddenly leaving it open to interpretation what exactly was going on. I liked the somewhat abrupt ending as I honestly had no idea what was going to happen after the rest of the family died, I thought it might just end there with Thomasin alone in the house or she might travel to another farm with the fairly cliche 'lone survivor' ending. I could see calling the ending abrupt, but I don't get the ambiguous or any kind of mystery. That ending had my eyes wide open.Īnyhow, definitely curious about your description, it's interesting! It hints a lot going on with the witch that we never see and it hints at a bigger evil than we fully get to taste in the film. Even though we understand it's a Witch, there's a mysterious allure that doesn't really answer all your questions and leaves you with that creeped out and almost haunted feeling. That mystery of something happening but you can't fully understand. You get the overall idea of this haunted hotel that "shines" and brings up these old memories and maybe trying to add new ones or something but there's a mystery that leaves you creeped out with a haunting lingering feeling. It didn't really answer too much about what exactly is going on.

One thing that I feel it syncs with Kubrick is that it feels bigger than just what we see on film. That cold mysterious allure is there but I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of the angel in the block of ice. Her whole family was murdered by Lucifer, and even if she didn't go to meet Black Phillip, stayed in the house and did her prayers, what would change?Ĭan you elaborate a bit? I'm confused as to what makes it dead? I agree that it has a Kubrick feel to it. Even the audience is forced to sympathize with the girl at the end, for "choosing the dark side." Because God did nothing in return of the entire family's prayers. And the point was how attractive the devil's side could be in some cases-actually, not in some cases but in any case. He wanted nothing but forgiveness from God, so Black Phillip straight out killed him.ĭespite its slow pace, the movie made its point very clear. The father, on the other hand, was impenetrable. So, a beautiful woman appeared that Caleb could not resist.

Caleb was going through puberty, and he was full of lust. The mother wanted to see her children, and he had them appear to her, making her read a book that was likely demonic. For example: Black Phillip knew the exact buttons to push to seduce anyone. There were scenes that you had to pay attention if you wanted to know what the hell was going on. They took their time making the film, and keeping the audience's adrenaline high wasn't their main goal.

I can understand why some people found the movie boring, the pace was slow. Some of us watch a movie for entertainment, to pass the time, and some of us look at a movie like they would a painting. And then him appearing behind the girl in complete darkness, showing nothing but only enough parts so the audience knew he was no longer an animal.

Even when the goat spoke to Thomasin, they kept the camera on the girl, because it was the audience's choice whether he spoke telepathically, or with his goat mouth. What makes this movie stand up from others is that it shows an accurate portrait of "if a devil chose to haunt a peasant family, this is how it would've happened"-There were no crazy make-ups, top notch CGI effects, the goat transforming into Lucifer with cheesy noises. The IMDB point is absolutely absurd, and I can definitely see this movie being mentioned among the classics maybe 20 years from now. I just finished the movie and it exceeded my expectations by a mile.
